The Journal of ExoTechnology and Education (jeXed) is an open-access, double-blind peer-reviewed, multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary academic journal hosted by the University of Johannesburg and UJ Press.
It is supported and managed by a dedicated group of volunteers whose passion, creativity, and scholarly commitment drive the journal’s vision and ongoing development. jeXed provides an inclusive and forward-looking platform for the publication of innovative, high-quality scholarship at the intersection of technology, gaming, and education. The journal aims to foster rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship on emerging technologies and transformative educational practices.
The journal places particular emphasis on higher education, educational technology, artificial intelligence, large language models, serious gaming, and game-based learning, as well as alternative and emerging approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment. It actively seeks contributions that explore how emerging technologies are reshaping educational practices, research methodologies, and knowledge production.
A defining feature of jeXed is its commitment to expanding conventional understandings of what constitutes valid and valuable academic work. In addition to traditional research and methodology articles, the journal welcomes a diverse range of scholarly contributions, including literature reviews, emerging researcher submissions, and shorter formats such as snippets, opinion pieces, and reflective commentaries. Beyond text-based outputs, jeXed strongly encourages multimodal and practice-based submissions, including infographics, e-learning materials, serious games, videos, and game designs.
Authors are also invited to incorporate or foreground creative and experimental research outputs, such as podcasts, apps, animations, screenshots, datasets, robotics, coding projects, presentations, and forms of “practice in motion.” These contributions are expected to meet rigorous academic and editorial standards while also pushing the boundaries of how research can be created, represented, and shared.
Through its focus on ExoTechnology and education, jeXed aims to foster innovative, critical, and disruptive scholarship that advances teaching, learning, assessment, and research practices. The journal is particularly well suited to scholars, educators, designers, researchers, and practitioners whose work challenges traditional paradigms of technology-enhanced education and explores new, hybrid, and creative ways of producing and communicating academic knowledge.
